Over the last few years, more and more news articles have been published discussing the positive aspects of tanning. However, the Federal Trade Commission only allows tanning salons to promote the cosmetic benefits associated with indoor tanning. This page is designed to highlight articles that discuss the beneficial aspect of moderate ultraviolet exposure under controlled conditions. |
Benefits of UV Light Outweigh Perceived Risks The Indoor Tanning Association (ITA) launched an aggressive nationwide campaign encouraging the public to rethink sun-tanning and criticizing dermatologists and the sunscreen and cosmetics industries for scaring Americans away from the sun.
Tanning beds help vitamin D deficiencyResearchers at the University of Boston found that vitamin D deficiency was common among the elderly people during non-summer days and exposure to UV rays from a commercial tanning bed could effectively stimulate production of this essential vitamin that now is believed to provide a potent anti-cancer activity among others.
We Need To Spend More Time In The SunLife on our planet requires sunlight to survive. And most organisms work hard to get it. Jungle reptiles often compete with each other to find the highest, warmest surfaces for sunbathing. Rain-forest plants race to fill rare, sunny openings in the thick canopy left by fallen trees. And some flowers even bend their stems to follow the sun's movement across the sky.
NEW STUDY: "Tanning May Protect Against Melanoma"According to a new study, tanning induced by ultraviolet rays plays a role in protecting against the development of skin cancer, namely melanoma, the fastest growing form of cancer in the world.
Earlier studies had linked exposure to tanning rays to increased risk of skin cancer. But the new study suggests that when the skin is exposed to tanning rays, a protein known as the "master watchman of the genome" is triggered to guard against cancer-causing DNA damage, which would otherwise lead to the development of skin cancer.

Reports Says That Sunlight Leads To A Healthy Smile According to a report from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis today, sunlight helps prevent tooth disease. "Calcium and vitamin D are important to oral health," says Charles F. Hildebolt, D.D.S., Ph.D., associate professor of radiology at Washington University's Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology and author of the paper. "The best way to get calcium is through the diet, but we need vitamin D to regulate calcium, and it's hard to eat enough foods rich in vitamin D to meet that need. The best source of vitamin D is sunshine."
Tanning Myth Challenged & BustedOn Wednesday September 14, 2005 the Discovery Channel re-aired an episode of a primetime television show that proved tanning beds DO NOT microwave consumers.
